== Biography ==
In 4 ABY, Jian Paret was the commander of [[Sixth Negative Regions|Black Sword Command]], including the [[Black Fleet]] stationed at [[N'zoth]]. Eight months after the [[Battle of Endor]], Paret received orders from [[Challer]] on [[Coruscant|Imperial Center]] to bring the Black Fleet there from N'zoth, simultaneous with a plea from [[Grand Admiral]] [[Peccati Syn]] to reinforce him at [[Liberation of Kashyyyk|Kashyyyk]] with the Black Fleet's flagship ''[[Intimidator (Executor-class)|Intimidator]].'' Before Paret could react to either summons, however, he was approached by the [[Ubiqtorate]] agent [[Orvar Krei]], who relayed orders from the reborn [[Palpatine|Emperor]] to take the Black Fleet into the [[Deep Core]] while falsely reassuring both Imperial Center and Syn that he was en route via [[Cal-Seti]].<ref>''[[Empire of Ashes: Fear]]''</ref>

== Behind the scenes ==
The scene in ''Empire of Ashes: Fear'' in which Paret gets the order to take the Black Fleet to the Deep Core is set immediately before the events of the prologue in ''Shield of Lies'', in which the Yevethans launch their coup and capture the Black Fleet. The ruse suggested by Orvan Krei explains why both Imperial and New Republic analysts later assumed that the Black Fleet was destroyed at Cal-Seti.
